are you typing something like

boot ide1/@0:0,OFWBOOT.XCF;1 -a

OpenFirmware Boot v1.xx
...
...
BOOT: netbsd.ram.gz [enter]


I've not had luck specifying the kernel to boot in the boot command in 
old world OF versions.
