Howdy,
Another bit of info:
I tried this on a B&W. I booted from the CD, and I don't have the problem.
The machine with the problem is a G4/AGP with a Sonnet CP upgrade
(1 Ghz 7455 CPU) to wit:

Could it be the L3 cache that's doing something bad? Do I need something
in my kernel OPTIONS to properly do this?
Thanks,

P.S. the problem also occurs with the kernel on the CD, so it's not
*just* _my_ kernel. ;->
