Well, I installed a completely clean binary 1.6.1 release, and the
X-server installed appears to be Xfree86 4.2.1. I much appreciate your
answer, but it seems there *must* be a way to get this working without
using Xmacppc.
Meanwhile I found and tried
<ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/arch/macppc/X-4.2.0-current/XF86Config>,
which however works the same as what I have tried before: X starts, but
the screen simply turns black. I also found
<http://www.netbsd.org/Ports/macppc/x11.html#xfconfig> but there wasn't
much there to try :-(
