Eduardo Horvath <eeh@netbsd.org> was proposing something like that 
for the whole system to have "a copy of hardware configuration info" 
- I think he called it "device properties"; see tech-kern archives. 
It was pretty transparently a copy of OF info, which, given that he's 
portmaster of sparc64, is not a surprise...
