Note: I did get a good boot with the files on the hd:,... It just didn't 
work on the cd:,... which
I usually do to try kernels out.

summary:
boot cd:,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.GENERIC_MD.gz	didn't work
boot hd:,ofwboot.xcf netbsd.GENERIC_MD.gz	worked

The files were installed to the hd from the cd so they are ok on the cd.
