I just recently found out about this kernel config option, and it's a
godsend.  My console is usable now.

Unless it doesn't work with some hardware, I can't imagine why it isn't on
by default in the GENERIC config.

It should at least be in the config file, even if it's commented out.  I
only found out about it from a post to port-macppc, and that wasn't even the
point of the post...
