Interesting . . . . as luck would have it (?!) I blew up this system the 
other day -- scrambled the boot disk somehow -- and after rebuilding it 
with a stock install of 1.5.2, all is well again. I'm not sure how I got 
a newer libc: I haven't yet determined how I can tell what package a 
file might belong to (is there a way?).
