How do you know they didn't replace any chips?

Maybe they have extra pads that allow them to use a hardware probe
(similar to JTAG).  So they would need external hardware -- rather
than using some hidden software/hardware -- but they wouldn't have
to unsolder anything.

And I still need to know if the kernel was designed to return to OF.
