Thanks for the advice.  I did that, and i also copied the boot.fs file
to the top level directory for good measure.

0 > boot cd:,ofwboot.xcf

and it just sits there :>

same thing happens with ofwboot.elf and OFWBOOT.XCF

"boot cd:0,OFWBOOT.XCF" gives the same DISK-LABEL and LOAD-SIZE errors i
reported in my earlier message

What should i try next?
