A much simpler thing to try when you get claim failed is to just try
it again a few times, reboot, and repeat. Some versions of
OpenFirmware (you didn't say which you have; knowing would help
diagnose this booting problem), can be picky about booting from
something that's not the mac ROMs.
Also, if you're seeing "partition not found" errors, then you're not
issuing the OF boot command properly. Try:
boot fd:0
to boot from a floppy.
