My understanding is that the modem serial port is turned off by
default as part of the power-saving setup, and we haven't yet found
the right bit to tweak to turn it on.

The most likely way of finding out the information is to dig through
the Darwin source code. It may also be possible to figure out what we
need through by meditating on the openfirmware code.
