One more problem.  I want to run XFree instead of Xmacppc on my
dual USB iBook, especially to get more colors.  I'm using the one
indicated in the macppc/X11 FAQ, with slight modifications to the
config file.

XFree starts fine, the mouse moves OK but the keyboard mapping is
wrong.  For instance, "exit\n" is "1n538".  I have a US keyboard
and like it that way (and I've selected the US keyboard in
XF86Config instead of the Japanese one).

Any clue?
