You should read the IEEE 1275 standard.  Actually, this isn't an IEEE
standard any longer, and I'm not sure, how one would obtain a real copy
of this "non-standard".  However, you may want to download a copy of
the last draft before this went into standardization from
ftp://playground.sun.com/pub/p1275/coredoc/1275-1994/1275.ps.gz.
