Ethernet cards only need to be OF-aware if you're going to boot off
them. The kernel doesn't use OF for PCI cards much after booting.
(Video cards are the only exception I can think of.)

I think it's more likely that the card is one of the de clones that
doesn't work well with the de driver and needs the tlp driver from
-current. (But that's also just a guess.)
