Still trying to understand the boot process with Open Firmware...
Suppose I have a HFS partition on my ide drive, containing Mac OS and other
Mac stuff. Could I simple put ofwboot.elf on that partition?

Kinda. Once we get booting off of the ide working, you'll need a dedicated
hfs partition to hold ofwboot.elf. The latter can find the kernel on an
ffs partition.
