There's no non-gzipped macppc-kernel on the 1.4 CD, so I can't say for
sure, but Open Firmware did give different (correct) error messages
when I tried to boot one of the README files and when I tried to boot
a non-existent file, so it can definitely read the disk. I assume if
there actually had been a bootable kernel (or ofwboot.elf) it would
have worked.
