I got the chance to try a Logitech MouseMan PS2/USB 4-button mouse. It 
works OK, with buttons 1,2, and 3 behaving as they should. If I move the 
"wheel" button (no. 2), the X server shuts down with something like  "Lost 
connection to 0:0. Explicit kill or server shutdown". Odd.
