I'm still trying to determine why I cannot log in to my recently-upgraded Q840 as a normal user.  (Aside: 4b2 kernel installed now, and the mc0 network problem seems resolved.  Thanks for all the help.  However, I seem to be unable to mount the CD-ROM now to install the rest of the sets.  I should have just copied them all to the disk. *sigh*)  Could this be because of new PAM settings that came with 3.x?  I'm not familiar at all with PAM, but it's the only change I could see that I thought might be the culprit.
