I think it depends on the disk. On my Q650:

# dmesg | grep sd0
sd0 at scsibus0 target 0 lun 0: <IBM, DNES-309170, SAH0> disk fixed
sd0: 8748 MB, 11474 cyl, 5 head, 312 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 17916240 sectors
sd0: sync (248.00ns offset 15), 8-bit (4.032MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing
# dmesg | grep sd1
sd1 at scsibus0 target 6 lun 0: <IBM, DNES-309170, SA30> disk fixed
sd1: 8748 MB, 11474 cyl, 5 head, 312 sec, 512 bytes/sect x 17916240 sectors
sd1: sync (248.00ns offset 15), 8-bit (4.032MB/s) transfers, tagged queueing

Faith is the quality that enables you to eat blackberry jam on a picnic
without looking to see whether the seeds move.

Contrary to popular belief, Unix is user friendly.
It just happens to be selective about who it makes friends with.
