I also had some problems with blackbox on my SE/30 when I first 
installed NetBSD.  I tried to report problems to the developer and test 
some builds, but never resolved the issue.  I just switched to iceWM 
which is also pretty light-weight, and the default theme is usable even 
at 1-bit color.
