I guess that'd be me :) Hmm... I just tried with a 1.6 kernel--booted
with no ethernet, got to the login prompt with a couple "mc0: no
carrier" errors along the way (flashbacks to the Suns at school that
would repeat "le0: No carrier - transciever cable problem?" when the
AUI slide locks would come loose and the transciever fell off :)
I logged in and ran "top" so something would be constantly updating
the screen, then plugged in the AAUI transceiver. Top kept running
and the network is up and running...

Which kernel version are you running? I've been putting off updating
to -current, but I guess I should :)
