Just to note, I have a 16Mhz-labeled part working at 33Mhz in my
(clock-chipped) LCIII, although I haven't tried pushing it very hard.

Firmware no, however non-Apple drives will probably have issues in
their lacking the necessary Mac device drivers written to disk during
low-level formatting. Particularly if using System 7.5.x, I'd
recommend low-levelling the disk with the Mac software "Lido7"
(http://www.euronet.nl/users/ernstoud/lido7.html), which can install
free drivers for non-Apple disks.
