What in rc.conf affects that?

If you use a FQDN in your hostname field (which isn't actually
correct), you can change this by running hostname(1) with an
argument (what to change the hostname to) as root.

If you mean the domainname field, it should have nothing to do with
"email purpsoses", as it's used only for NIS.
