Julian,
If memory serves (and if it doesn't some one on the list will correct 
me), OpenBSD forked from NetBSD many moons ago over some 
disagreements between OpenBSD's head and NetBSD core developers so 
they have some things in common but both have changed over the years. 
OpenBSD's main concern is security while NetBSD's is to run on as 
many different platforms as possible (not saying that NetBSD's 
security is bad).
 From my limited experience with each they are pretty similar in use 
but just different enough to confuse you (or at least me).
