Maybe. Do you have the docs so you can check the pinouts?
The printer expects some sort of handshaking support, though I'm not sure

Oh, you're sure you're using the serial interface? These things also had a
parallel interface, and you can get cables which will "hook" the two to
gether. Such arrangements won't do anything though....
