NetBSD-current will become NetBSD 1.5 in a few months.  Take a look at the
release hierarchy page on www.netbsd.org.  That's pretty much how it
works.  As for the fix, I'd strongly suggest attempting to boot with a
-current kernel and test it.  If no one tries it out, we'll have no way of
knowing it's broken until it's too late (and then you'll have to wait for
NetBSD 1.6 or something ;-)
