Sounds you like have the "motor enable - ME" jumper in. Almost all
modern controllers expect that feature to be off, and assume the drive
will spin up by itself on power up, Macs included. If there is no
jumper, look for "motor enable - ME" or "delayed start - DS" in the
mode pages.
