By no means is this scientific, but here's how I see things:
ftp transfer: I get at least 50k-150k/sec to/from a server at university.
After if I telnet into that very same server, the connection is bad. I
type stuff, and don't see it update on screen until second or two later
(sometimes more). My system's got 48 megs of ram, and litterally nothing
running.
