I'm just guessing, but it sounds like you are relatively new to Unix in
general, yes? Please don't be insulted if I'm mistaken. A good book to get
started with is *Unix for the Impatient* by Abrahams and Larson, published
by Addison Wesley. It's a good solid introduction, goal-oriented and
clearly written. There must also be an O'Reilly-published intro to Unix;
having never seen it, I can assure you that it is quite good. All O'Reilly
books are.

That's a great first project, and one that resources like the books
mentioned above are designed to help you with. The obvious way (to me) to
implement it would be as a shell script.
