Thanks for pointing me in the direction of the 1.4.1 Color X server..

next question...

When I try to start X now I get

mirage# startx

Fatal server error:
Failed to establish all listening sockets
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 61
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errono 61): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

does this tell anyone anything?  Perhaps I installed it incorrectly?
