A general word of advice to those who are encountering flakiness when
trying to use elderly Macs:
The internal SCSI cables are not immortal! They wear out, due to flexing at
the connectors, especially if you reconfigure the Mac often by changing
disk drives, as I do.
A simple diagnostic technique is to manually flex the cable at each
connector while the Mac is running. If it crashes, you need a new cable.
I recently solved a long term hard-crash problem with my Q950 by simply
replacing this ribbon cable. The Q900 & 950 models are particularly at risk
because the cable is very long and has many connectors, which are also not
well-placed for connecting to several drives.
Replacements run about $18, but you can make your own if you are VERY careful.
