If you install the 'pine' package out of pkgsrc, you also get WU's ipop3d
and imapd. I've used both for years and for small-medium mail servers,
they work just fine. I'm currently using imapd on my Centris 650 as my
home e-mail server.

Just in case you don't know, you can get the pkgsrc tarball at:

ftp://ftp.netbsd.org/pub/NetBSD/NetBSD-current/tar_files/pkgsrc.tar.gz
