I ran NetBSD 1.3.1 for a long time on exactly that model.

I had to have the hacked Quadra kernel to do X (that may be in the
GENERIC kernel by now, though, I haven't been following port-mac68k
very closely), had to replace the 68LC040 with a real 68040 (because
fpu emulation is broken for LC040s, and why would you emulate when you
can get the real thing?), but that was *really* cheap ($40 including
shipping, if memory serves). No, you can't use the internal IDE drive
(or I never bothered to fight it), but the external SCSI chain works
just fine.

This machine would still be up and running, but I've got macppc
booting on my 7500 and didn't reall feel like trucking two computers
across the country (from St. Louis, MO to Philadelphia, PA - I attend
Swarthmore College, www.swarthmore.edu), so the older mac is with my
folks now.

I would say go ahead and dive in, provided you've got an external SCSI
drive to use, and feel free to contact me with any specific hardware
weirdness you have (I probably did too and am just forgetting it now).
