Exactly what problem is keeping you from partitioning/formatting the
drive?

I can't be absolutely sure this is it, but Apple SC HD Setup is known
to handle only Apple devices (i.e. the drives that ship mounted in the
computer from the factory), and you need to binary-patch it to make it
handle non-Apple drives.

I'm pretty sure it's covered somewhere in the mac68k FAQ or one of
HOW-TOs, but I can't remember which of them does, so I'll write it
here:

1. Open Apple SC HD Setup with ResEdit
2. Open resource "wfwr"
3. If "wfwr" resource contains one byte "00", modify it to "FF"
4. Save Apple SC HD Setup and exit ResEdit

I'd recommend that you make a copy of your emergency disk and do the
above on the copy instead of the original disk.

Hope this helps,
