You could add "REPORT CONNECT" to the beginning of your chat script;
that causes a line to be appended to /etc/ppp/connect-errors, or else
whatever report file you've set chat to write to using chat's "-r"
option.

Myself, I just use "chat -v" which puts all that, and more, into
/var/log/messages.
