I have now attempted to start X with startx, but when it starts to run, 
it gives me the message that it recognizes my display, but it then stops 
after giving me the following:

X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

and then returns me to the prompt.  I am very new at this, and help is 
appreciated.  Bye.
