Trade your Kensington mouse for a standard Apple ADB mouse.  Ok, so you
might not have a Kensington mouse or trackball, but that's usually the
reason why you see this error.  Alternatively, you could try a -current
kernel.  They use different hardware support, and if it works for you,
you'd be answering a really long standing question :-)  Please let me know
if you try a -current kernel and it works for you.  Also please let us
know if you use a standard mouse and that doesn't work.
