Well, it has a memory leak, and no one seems to understand why, but you
can always run the version included in the package system... Installing
it is a snap.

As root:

cd /usr/pkgsrc/sysutils/top
vi files/defaults		# edit to your satisfaction
make && make install && make clean

If you haven't looked at the package system yet, you've got cool things
in store for you. It's *very* neat stuff.
