Thanks for the help.  It seems to be working correctly now.  I think that
the first time I connected, it connected improperly.  When I ran the
ppp-down, it stopped PPP but somehow left the default route there.  It
seems to be working fine now.

something else kinda curious though.  Now when I connect, it works, but I get
the following message on the console.

pppd[282]: Couldn't set active-filter in kernel:  Inappropriate ioctl for
device

It seems to be working OK though.
I'm using "NetBSD M68k 1.3"  (not 1.3.1 or current)  I'm not even thinking
about upgrading for a while.  I've got too much to learn first, and I had
enough trouble just getting this onto the disk in the first place.  Had to
cpin all the files and expand them in single user mode due to the SCSI 5
read/write error problem.  (3.2G quantum fireball on my Centris 610 w/ FPU.)
