I'm starting to suspect you installed nothing but the server.  You
need, at least, to install xbase.tgz.  Also, as I wrote in the
previous message, if you are running in B&W mode, there's NO reason
that you should be running either of the color X server from
ftp.macbsd.com.  You would be better off running the stock B&W server
from ftp.netbsd.org (it's smaller thus taking less memory than color
servers).
