If my PowerBook 145 is any indication, this seems rather likely.  In case
you don't recall, a few months ago, I posted a message indicating that its
progressive damage was greatly reduced by unmounting the partitions by
hand and syncing before shutting down NetBSD....  If I can figure out a
way to turn off caching on that drive, I may try that... probably after
finals.  :-)
