ed(1) is your friend....

vi lives in /usr/bin; it needs shared libraries from /usr/lib and a
sufficiently intelligent terminal. Just yesterday, I was confronted with
the task to bring up a machine from a root partition (/sbin,/bin) over the
network. Quite instructive...
