Get the IMAP4 server from ftp.cac.washington.edu.

It will give you a really nice IMAP4 server -plus- a great POP3 server.

I compled it right outta the box with netBSD for Intel 1.3, so it may work
for macBSD.

It works well, and IMAP is the way to go.
