Nope; I got a error message from "Drive Setup" saying it could not run on my Macintosh.  Are there any other suggestions?

I think that Drive Setup will initialize this drive.  Drive Setup is 
available from Apple (in Utilities Folder of Systems 7.5 and above ).  
Incidently, a Format is not typically required.  You only need to 
initialize.  ( i.e. write partition map, partitions, & drivers ).
