OK, here's some additional info on my configuration.
For the life of me, I don't know what's wrong.
this time I've pasted some of my test info and config info
to avoid the typos:

Any ideas please?

Trying to setup a local LAN between my two Macs

Max:
Centris 610	MacOS 8.1	built-in ethernet	192.168.0.3

scooter:
SE/30 MacBSD 1.3	Focus etherlan card	192.168.0.2

Ethertalk and TCP/IP work when both are booted MacOS so
the hardware is fine. I configured the machine per
Mark Andres' "NetBSD Networking How-To"
