That took care of it.  vi works fine with vt100 as my term, and the bash
history display erases to end of line on each keystroke, which it was
intermittently failing to do before.  Now I only have to live with the
cursor ending up in the middle of the screen after login.   A fair trade
IMHO.  :-)
