In retrospect I realize I probably should have combined these responses
into one but oh well.

To answere your part Colin:
Mkfs had no trouble at all and the thing about 1 gig might be close (I was
using about 970 MB for root & usr) but it worked just fine with that size
after I rearranged the order.
