A bit more detailed info on your system's configuration, the version
(which official release verion, or which snapshot release), how it
freezes, etc., may help a great deal.  I can't say anything with only
this much of information.

Then your information is a bit out of date.  NetBSD now runs on full
68040's.  Not on 68LC040's yet.  See http://www.macbsd.com/macbsd/
