Make sure that your includes are up to date with the kernel that you've
built--especially the header files from /usr/src/sys/*.  It should then
be possible to build & install libkvm.old and any staticly-linked binaries
that depend on it.

On rare occasions, you'll also want to update /usr/bin/make and/or
/usr/share/mk, too.

Generally, it's easier to use a snapshot...  ;-)
