It just quits the window manager, but if you make the window manager the
thing that the X server waits to exit (for whatever reason), it can also
be used to trigger the death of the X session.

Typically, or at least by default, you have an xterm with a title (and
icon name) of `login'.  Exit this xterm and the X session terminates.
